May 10, 2011 (Moose Jaw, SK) – The Moose Jaw Pavers hosted the Spring Classic on May 7-8, which is Race #1 on the Sask Cup Road Series for 2011. The omnium stage race had a Hill Climb TT, criterium and a road race, with competitors from Saskatchewan and Alberta battling for bragging rights.

In the Cat 2/3 department, Dalton Fayad (Regina Cycling Club) claimed first in the Hill Climb TT with a 6:33 clocking, while Brad Kerr (Regina Cycling Club) was five seconds off that mark for a second place finish. Later Saturday night in the rain soaked crit, Barrett Dunbar (Horizon 100) from Saskatoon won the pack sprint, with Pedro Eguelta (Regina Cycling Club) in second and Kerr in third.

As things dried up Sunday afternoon for the road race, it was again Fayad who took the top of the podium for first place and Kerr finishing second, giving him enough points to claim the overall weekend Spring Classic Championship.

Category 4 was a great collection of young and old talent from both provinces. Alyosha Boldt (Cycledelia) dashed up the Hill Climb TT for a winning time of 7:02. Alyosha is the son of Team Canada Paralympic bike racer Arnold Boldt who was in Australia over the weekend at a World Cup race. In the Cat 4 Criterium, fear was set aside, as these guys kept off the brakes in the pouring rain to give the crowd a great performance.

It was young 14 year old Joshua Kropf from Western Cycle Development Team, who beat the pack in a photo finish to claim first place. Sunday’s road race involved a four-rider pile up, but Regina Cycling Club member Sean Kukura (Regina Cycling Club) was able to outsprint the pack for the road race win.

Cat 5 racers were out in full colors as well for this race. Newcomer Lucio Baldo from Saskatoon, racing for the Horizon 100 club, was beaming with three stage victories. Punching the Hill Climb TT clock in at 7:10, whipping the fast field in the crit and then also outsprinting the pack for Sunday’s road race win!

The women’s category was also dominated by one individual, as Hannah Cooley (Northern Bush Rastas) racked up three wins. Cooley had an 8:17 Hill Climb TT win to go along with her crit and road race victories.

Concluding the weekend of racing were the U14 kids, with Reed Aspen (Bruce’s Cycle Works) taking first place overall, followed by Ben Toombs (Swift Current Cycling Club) and Jacob Kropf (Western Cycle Dev Team).

Overall, it was a great first weekend of racing in Saskatchewan. There are four more races on the Sask Cup Road Series calendar, with the next event being the extremely popular Bikes on Broadway race in Saskatoon on the May long weekend.
