July 12, 2005 – USA Cycling has posted its updated individual and team NRC standings following the weekend of racing, which included the Cascade Classic in Oregon. On the strength of his overall win, plus one stage win and one second place, Scott Moninger of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team
Presented by Maxxis has taken over the top of the individual standings
from his teammate and USPRO Champion, Chris Wherry. Moninger has 1116
points to Wherry’s 1082. Gord Fraser, also of Health Net Presented by
Maxxis, held on to third place, adding points to his total with a stage
win, a second place and sixth overall. He has 971 points, nearly 200
points ahead of fourth place Danny Pate (Jelly Belly/Pool Gel) with 781.
Also, Health Net Presented by Maxxis rider Greg Henderson remains in
the top 10 at tenth place with 535 points, while teammate John Lieswyn
goes to 11th with 496.
With the Moninger’s overall win plus Fraser’s strong 6th place, plus the
stage wins and additional podium placings, Health Net Presented by
Maxxis extended its lead in the team competition over Colavita/Sutter
Home from about 1900 points to nearly 2300 points. Health Net Presented
by Maxxis now has 4200 points to Colavita’s 1920. Navigators’ strong
showing at Cascade moved them up to a close third at 1759.
It should be noted that USA Cycling changed its formula for calculating
team points for this season. Previously, they compiled points
accumulated by every rider on the team. This year that changed to the
total of the top five riders in the individual standings. If the team
standings included all of the accumulated points, the team would show an
additional 1381 points, giving it 5581 for the year. In 2004, in winning
the NRC team competition, Health Net pb Maxxis accumulated 5136 points
for the season (to Jelly Belly’s 4290).
Health Net pb Maxxis will be competing in at least four more significant
NRC events this season as a team, culminating with the San Francisco
Grand Prix on September 4.
