October 03, 2014 (Nanaimo, BC) – A reduced field of 10 showed up for MIVA’s penultimate climb of the 2014 series. Overcast skies and a 15 degree temperature with no wind provided ideal conditions. It was the first time this 5.7km climb has been used in competition so it was interesting to see how times would compare with the annual Duomont/Wiegles championship ascent.

As usual, the first two starters were Aiden Hare and older sister Abigail and, at the top, Abigail was just over two minutes faster. The remainder of the contestants, with the exception of Lorrie Baildham, were in the men’s category and 3rd. to 8th. Places were keenly contested, with only a minute separating them. Second , producing a very creditable sub fourteen minute effort up the multi-grade ascent, nicknamed “the mountain” by local riders, was newcomer Ken Olson. But winner Justin Mark nailed it, beating Ken by a minute and a half.

Lorrie B. did a great ride, only 6 seconds out of Third place overall.

Thanks to Timekeepers Jason Hare and Peter McC and to club photographer Patrick Burnham.

On Saturday is the club hill climb championship on Duomont with a get together at Metral Starbucks afterwards.
