Milk Ras – Navigators’ Power Wins Stage

May 25, 2003 (Ireland) – Navigators' Ciaran Power today lived up to his name with an impressive ride in the 2.5 ranked FBD Milk Ras in Ireland. The former Ras winner attacked after just a mile of racing into the 180-Km stage-7 and was joined by Patrick Kohler from Germany, Jaaron Poad (Australian Team Down Under) and Yanto Barker (Wales). With Power, riding for the Irish national team, doing most of the driving in the breakaway, the quartet had a lead of almost five minutes by the Category 2 KOM at Bellavalley Gap after 63 miles. The relentless pressure from Power saw Barker dropped on the climb.

When the Navigators' man had to have two rear wheel changes shortly after, both Kohler and Poad sat up and waited on him. Clearly the strongest in the group, the duo decided they wouldn't last long without the Irishman.  By the 10Km mark Power had attacked on a slight drag and dropped the Australian. Kohler, however, stayed with him and it began to look as if Power had done too much work but then he jumped clear at the 1Km mark and finished with 16 seconds to spare over the German at Oldcastle.  Having never won a stage previously, this was Power's second of the week and he is still looking ahead to tomorrow's (Sunday) final day criterium in Phoenix Park, Dublin.
