March 18, 2005 – “La Primavera” is set for its 96th edition tomorrow, and promises to be as competitive as ever. The longest of the European classics, Milan San Remo (MSR) is just a touch under 300km at 294km. Although there are two famous climbs, the Cipressa and the Poggio, in recent years the race has come down to a pack sprint.
Debuting at MSR is Canada’s Michael Barry, who, along with his Discovery teammate George Hincapie, are hoping to make their mark at one of the most famous classics. Other favourites are Spain’s Oscar Freire (Rabobank) who is super-hot after a tear of early season wins. Don’t count out Germany’s Erik Zabel (Telekom) eager to improve on his second place in 2004. And of course, if it comes to a sprint once again, never count out Italy’s speedster, Mario Cipollini (Liquigas-Bianchi). Stay tuned for race reports and photos at pedalmag.com.
