April 23, 2010 (Toronto ON) – The Midweek Cycling Club’s 9-week program Youth and Adult Learn–to–Race program starts at 6 pm on Monday May 3. The program repeats the first Monday in July and runs throughout the summer with Monday night training sessions.
Midweek’s Learn-to-Race program is recognized as the GTA’s most competitive cycling development program, with a reputation for quality, beginner-friendly cycling instruction. The sessions are conducted by experienced coaches and run the gamut from first-timers to bike racers with a season of racing behind them.
“Participants range from 11 to 60 years of age with about half women. It’s a great way to get out, have fun, learn new bicycling skills, meet new like minded cyclists while challenging and exhausting yourself getting the cyclist’s high. We take them from knowing how to ride a bike to being comfortable in races and in large groups riding situations” says program organizer Craig Fagan.
Cycling improves cardiovascular performance, builds stronger legs and extends endurance. Learn-to-Race attracts athletes from many disciplines who use it to cross train and enhance performance. “We see athletes from speed skating, basketball, hockey, to football players because it’s a great way to train off season and stay competitive” comments Fagan. It’s also the perfect sport for the hockey and basketball player that is small of frame. Being small is a huge benefit to a competitive cyclist!
Learn-to-Race participants are divided into sub-groups.
Each receives individualized instruction based on a mix of their individual skills, confidence and riding speed. “All who can ride a bicycle are welcome… over the course of the season we will take you from a frightened newbie to a confident cyclist with the skills you need to be competitive” says Fagan. “Cycling is a great social activity, many people say it gives them a natural “high” and Midweek’s program opens the door to other club activities and to weekly racing at provincial, national and/or international level.”
