October 26, 2003 (Victoria, BC) – PacificSport's Melanie McQuaid won the Xterra World Championship in Maui, Hawaii today while Jill Savege narrowly missed the podium at the Athens World Cup triathlon.
McQuaid, a PacificSport cyclist and triathlete who has competed on the Xterra Series for a few years and who took silver at the World Championships two years ago, beat out the Xterra Series winner in the event, best described as an off-road triathlon. Fourth out of the water, McQuaid came off the bike with five minutes ahead of the rest of the field, and was first to the finish line.
In Athens, Savege, of Kelowna, missed the third place podium by just 16 seconds. Victoria's Natasha Filliol was 15th, Samantha McGlone 18th, while DNFs were posted by Olympians Shannon Donnelly, Carol Montgomery and Simon Whitfield.
The PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre Victoria consists of six national training centres (athletics, cycling, rowing, rugby, swimming, triathlon), and nine regional training centres (badminton, canoe-kayak, curling, cycling, diving, field hockey, swimming, synchronized swimming, tennis). The centre is one of eight Canadian Sport Centres, including Atlantic, Calgary, Montréal, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Vancouver.
The PacificSport Group consists of national centres in Victoria and Vancouver, now known as Canadian Sport Centres; a province-wide sport development centre in Whistler and the seven regional centres located in the Fraser Valley, Interior, Okanagan, Northern BC, Vancouver Island, Vancouver and Victoria.
