Mardis Lachine Saputo — Round #2

June 17, 2006 — As reported recently in the Journal de Montreal Sebastien Moquin (Sleeman Clear Energie) took full advantage of the absence of rival David Veilleux (Garneau Optik) to win Round #2 of the 29th edition of the Mardis Lachine Saputo last Tuesday.

Moquin pulled ahead of Daniel Belisle (Cinelume-Cycles Performance) and Jean Francois Laroche (Sleeman Clear Energie) to finish the 50 km race with a time of 1:26. With 256 points he now wears the yellow leader’s jersey.

Moquin admitted that he thought the race would be easier without Veilleux and other riders who are at the Tour de Beauce. He and his teammates tried to stage a breakaway after the first sprint, but the peloton quickly caught them. Moquin wa his teammates “for carrying me to the finish line.”

Belisle was disappointed with his performance saying that with two kids he’s had to put limitations on his training schedule. Belisle was only able to participate at two races last year. Meanwhile Laroche was happy with his third place finish and his teammate’s win.

In the junior Lait’s Go category, Simon Lambert Lemay (Andre Cycles Club) won finishing in 31:40, shaving 46 seconds off the record. Lambert Lemay says he hopes to win at least 10 races this year, but admitted that might be difficult.

Finishing in third in the junior race was William Garneau, the 16-year-old son of former Olympian, Louis Garneau, the owner of the renowned cycling clothing company, Louis Garneau Sports. He congratulated Lambert Lemay, noting his very good “coup de pédale.” Garneau also mentioned that his father had given him considerable encouragement and good advice. The young Garneau is hoping to realize his goals for this year – to finish among the top three at both les Mardis Cyclistes and the Quebec Cup.

The Mardis Lachine Saputo race series takes place every Tuesday evening in the Montreal suburb of Lachine.
