May 23, 2006 — According to an AFP report Liberty-Seguros Team manager Manolo Saiz and team doctor Eufemiano Fuentes have been arrested on suspected doping charges. The Cadena Ser radio station in Spain broke the news today and neither Manolo or Fuentes are with the team at the Giro d’Italia.

A spokesman for the Liberty Seguros was quick to counter the news stating “At the moment we are unable to confirm anything. We have not yet been able to contact the sporting director.”

In addition a Spanish Cycling Federation spokesman Luis Roman also denied that the organization had launched an investigation into Liberty Seguros or filed a complaint against Saiz or Fuentes.

Liberty Seguros is no stranger to scandal — in February 2006 former Liberty Seguros star Roberto Heras was banned for two years after testing positive for EPO. He was also stripped of his 2005 Vuelta a Espana title.
