August 24, 2009 (Ottawa, ON) – The 2009 Tour de France racing number donated by Lance Armstrong to a fundraiser for five cyclists struck by a minivan in Kanata, ON last month sold for $5,000 in an online auction. Armstrong’s number 22 bib, autographed and attached to the corresponding Stage 11 page of his Tour race bible, includes a map, profile and key points from the 192km stage on July 15 from Vatan to Saint-Fargeau, where Armstrong placed 54th on the day. The seven-time Tour winner placed third overall this year.
According to the Ottawa Citizen, the fundraising effort raised over $20,000 for the five injured cyclists, four of whom attended the event held in Ottawa at a Glebe area pub on Monday, August 17, which was attended by nearly 500 supporters. One of the cyclists who was struck in the accident, Robert Wein, is still in a coma.
