Ladies Tour of Qatar Stage 4 – Wild Wins Overall, Glaesser 46th

release by ASO

February 01, 2013 (DohaCorniche, Qatar) – Netherland’s Kirsten Wild conquered a third Ladies Tour of Qatar crown after triumphing on the final stage of the 5th edition. The 2009 and 2010 winner of the event powered to a third consecutive stage win on the Doha Corniche beating Brand and Tagliaferro in the final bunched sprint. In the overall standings, Wild beats Hosking and Van Dijk.

Stage 4: SealineBeach Resort – DohaCorniche, 86.5kms
80 riders at the start (Jasinska (MCG) and Knetemann (RBW), non starters). Sunny and windy

At the start this morning of the fourth and final stage of the Ladies Tour of Qatar, Kirsten Wild’s overall lead was only of 3 tiny seconds on Chloe Hosking. In other words a lot was still at stake. The 80 riders remaining in the race took off at 1:07 PM for an 86.5km ride all the way to the Doha Corniche where they would have to cover five laps of the traditional final circuit.

Facing the wind, the pack remained bunched until the first intermediate sprint in Al Wakra (km 38.5) won by Wild (SKI) ahead of Hosking (HPU) and Van Dijk (SLU). That gave the Dutch leader an extra bonus second on her main rival. Just after the sprint, nine ladies managed to break away: MacLean (GEW), Rowney, Small (both SLU), Guderzo (MCG), Brand (RBW), Longo Borghini (HPU), Valsecchi (BPK), Cordon (FRA), Olds and Glaesser (both TIB). Their lead grew to 1’10 at km 55 before dropping down once on the final circuit.

The second bonus sprint at the 2nd crossing of the line (km 62.5) was claimed by Glaesser ahead of Cordon and Olds, while the pack remained 48″ adrift. The front riders were eventually all caught with just over two laps to go. The pack remained bunched all the way to the finish where a splendid sprint was to take place between the strongest riders.

Once again, like on the two previous stages, Kirsten Wild powered to victory, outsprinting Lucinda Brand (RBW) and Marta Tagliaferro (MCG). The Dutch rider captured her sixth success on Qatar soil and comforted her overall lead. Wild indeed wins the Ladies Tour of Qatar for the third time after 2009 and 2010 and shows that she really is the Queen of the event. In the final overall standings, she can enjoy a lead of 14″ on Hosking and 29″ on Van Dijk.

Added to her Golden Jersey, Wild also wins the points classification’s Silver Jersey while, like last year, Chloe Hosking finishes best young rider.
