LA Track World Cup #3 Day 2 – Session 2 Report, Full Results and Photos

January 20, 2008 (Los Angeles, CA) – Canadian track riders had little luck making finals on Saturday as Ryan Mckenzie, Gina Grain, Stephanie Roorda and Julia Bradley all failed to advance to the finals in endurance racing at the LA Track World Cup #3. Grain came the closest missing out on advancing by a single point.

In the men’s Keirin, Canada’s Cam Mackinnon and fellow Canuck Travis Smith (Momentum) had the misfortune of being placed in the same heat, with Smith coming second in the heat behind Sergey Borisov (Russia). In an ironic twist Smith had expressed to Pedal earlier this week his dislike for the new Keirin format in which only one rider, not two, advances to the second round.

Arnaud Tournant, the ageless French veteran showed he is still amongst the fastest men in the world some ten years after setting his world kilo record. Tournant beat out Christos Volikakis (Greece) who was second and Olympic Champion “Flying” Ryan Bailey took third.

Mackinnon made the most of the second chance winning his repechage, and eventually placing 12 in the 7-12 final. Unfortunately Smith failed to advance in his repechage.

Australia reaffirmed that they are the best team pursuit nation in the business with veteran Brad McGee anchoring a young squad to a stunning come-from-behind victory over Denmark. The always strong Ukraine rounded out the podium.

Jamila Machacova teamed up with Korean Min Hye Lee to lap the field in the women’s points race final. Chinese rider Yan Li gave testimony to the rise of the Asian nations on the track rounding out the podium ahead of World Champion Kate Bates. American Becky Quinn lost her lead in the World Cup overall. Quinn had a signature ride that saw her relegated for diving onto the apron in one of the sprints.

The final event of the evening was the men’s 15km Scratch race and American Bobby Lea was on a mission to put on a show for the home crowd. The lanky and likeably Lea featured in nearly every move of the night but the one that counted at the end. Lea’s bravado-ridden early breakaways left him with nothing to respond to the attack thrown down by World Champ Kam Po Wong. Wong of Hong Kong won the race ahead of breakaway companion Vasili Kiryienka of Belarus. Wim Stoetinga (Netherlands) took out the furious field sprint. Burnaby regular and multi-time masters world champion Kenny “The Cash Register” Williams came 17th.
