January 19, 2007 (Los Angeles, USA) — Gina Grain placed 6th in the women’s points race final. Grain rode consistently throughout the event scoring points in multiple sprints to consolidate her solid performance.
American Sarah Hammer overcame heavy marking with an aggressive ride that saw her consistently on the attack. A strong lead-out by compatriot Becky Quinn saw Hammer win the final sprint to take the points race win.
Chris Hoy (Great Britain) proved he’s more than just a kilo rider leading a British 1-2 with Ross Edgar coming second, narrowly edging out 2004 Junior World Champion Australian Shane Perkins.
Anna Meares (Australia) won the gold medal in the women’s match sprint in a bizarre event that saw several crashes, a dead heat and no fourth place finisher.
Meares defeated Frenchwoman Clara Sanchez in two straight rides, but the real drama was in the bronze medal final. Top qualifier Shuang Gou of China was relegated for a second time in the competition when she crashed with Sanchez in the semi-final. This meant there was no 4th place awarded for the event.
Germany’s Jane Gerish, 11th in qualifying, was awarded the bronze medal. Gerish had the dragon-slaying ride of the event, as she took Anna Meares to an extremely unusual four rounds. Meares and Gerish tied to the pixel in the photo finish in their first heat.
Russel Hampton (GB- but riding for his trade team) won an aggressive men’s points race that saw 14 riders take a lap at various points in the race. Hampton jumped into a late race move that was able to lap the field, making him a lap up on any other rider, and two up on the back half of the field. Canadian Ryan McKenzie made an attempt to escape at 35 laps to go, but was brought back by the hard charging field.
