LA Track World Cup 2004 – Preview

December 10th, 2004 – From December 10-12, nine Canadian track cyclists will be storming around the ADT Event Center Velodrome in Carson, California at the World Cup Track race. There are 170 athletes competing from 32 countries, and 24 of these athletes are Olympic medallists. Our Canadian contingent consists of Matt Chater of British Columbia, Cam MacKinnon of Alberta, Yannick Morin of Quebec, Lori-Ann Muenzer of Alberta and Travis Smith of Alberta, all of whom are competing in the Sprint events. The athletes competing in the endurance events are Zach Bell of Alberta, Martin Gilbert of Qubec, Gina Grain of British Columbia and Mandy Poitras of British Columbia. Three of these athletes (Bell, Grain, and Chater) have never competed at a World Cup event and are ecstatic to have the opportunity to race with some of the best track cyclists in the world. Australia has the most talented team of riders, many of whom medalled at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Germany, Spain and France also have teams consisting of Olympic medallists and will have a strong presence.

The event is hosting some of the World’s top current champions but it is also hosting some past champions. Greg LeMond, three-time Tour de France winner and twice a Road World Champion, will be a special guest along with Eric Heiden, a five-time Gold Olympic medallist in speed skating who went on to compete with the 7-eleven professional cycling team.

The new ADT Event Center Velodrome is a 100,000 square foot $15 million centre which was only completed last year. It is 250 meters in length and is made from 33 miles of Siberian pine. The ADT Velodrome hosted the 2004 Junior Track Cycling Championships and will host the 2005 World Track Championships on March 24-27, 2005.

Good luck to our Canadian team and stay tuned for reports and results at pedalmag.com.
