December 13th, 2004 (Carson, Calif.) — Yesterday at the Los Angeles Track World Cup 2004 Gina Grain and Mandy Poitras of British Columbia stormed around the track and took fourth and six in the Women’s Scratch Race. The race was aggressive averaging 46km/hr over the 10 kilometers. After competing in the points race and getting her feet wet in World Cup competition on Friday night, Grain felt much more at ease on Sunday. “My legs felt awesome, but I played it smart. The race had lots of attacks and we spent very little time on the boards,” she said.

Despite the many attacks nothing got away, it came down to a bunch sprint. With five laps to go both Poitras and Grain found themselves in bad position. Poitras, the more experienced rider, knew what to do and made her move. Grain followed her lead and got right on her wheel. With one lap to go they found themselves at the front. Grain commented, “It was just Mandy and I. She was going strong with me right behind, but with half a lap to go other girls started coming around us. It was then that I made a technical error, I tried to pass like a roadie.”

Grain may have a few technical details to learn but for her first World Cup a 6th place is fantastic. Yet she shrugged it off saying what made this race different was that she knew she was racing against all the top track cyclists in the world. “I knew selections had been made, just like I was selected to represent Canada here – these were the top fish.”

The Canadian Olympic Sprint team consisting of Yannik Morin of Quebec, Cam McKinnon of Alberta, and Travis Smith of Alberta, managed to collect one UCI point by placing tenth. Unfortunately the Canadian Madison team weren’t able to finish.
