La Ruta de los Conquistadores Stage 1 Report, Results, Photos – Montoya, Mata Win

release by La Ruta de los Conquistadores

November 02, 2012 (San Jose, Costa Rica) – The first stage of the La Ruta de los Conquitadores started at 6:00 am on Thursday from the Marriot in Hermosa Beach with a 4km neutral roll-out. As the route headed into the mountains, a group of 15 elite riders, including Paolo Montoya (CRC), Todd Wells (USA), Milton Ramos (HON), Alex Grant (USA), Federico Ramirez (CRC), and Rom Akerson (CRC) took the lead.

Mud was a factor, and Wells commented conditions were similar to last year. “The ground was extremely slippery because of rain yesterday, and it was very hot…. I hope I do better tomorrow,” he said.

At kilometer 56, Paolo Montoya attacked the group and maintained a lead of about 2 minutes on his nearest rivals, Wells and Akerson.

“Towards the peak of San Pedro, I increased my pace and left the others behind, during the San Pablo stretch, I started feeling cramps…. I managed to recover in Grifo Alto,” said Montoya.

According to the storming Costa Rican, who toppled over only a few meters after crossing the line, he had not trained enough last week.

“I finished the last few miles purely on momentum, I was exhausted. It came down purely to my brain controlling me and not giving up,” he said.

Montoya arrived first with a time of 5 hours, 01 minutes and 19 seconds. Two minutes and eight seconds after, the American, Wells, finished.

“My strategy for tomorrow is to stay with Paolo [Montoya] to recover time, since he seems to be good at the ups and downs in the morning. It will be a crucial day in the race.”

Third place was Alex Grant, who abandoned the race in 2009 and placed second in 2010. “The leaders went extremely fast and I rode my own pace, luckily in the end I passed about ten competitors and made it up to second.”

Rom Akerson, who came second, was disqualified “for receiving assistance on several occasions outside the permitted area,” explained a statement by the Costa Rican Cycling Federation.

In the women’s race, it was Pua Mata (USA) who took first place in a time of 5:54:11. “I had fun, I saw it more as an adventure and not a competition, it was difficult but it was great, I was alone most of the time. The last section on the train tracks scared me a little,” said U.S. National Marathon Champion.

Sonya Looney (USA) finished second and Ligia Madrigal (CRC) was third. The second stage starts on Friday, with another 6:00 am start in Terramall and culminating in Turrialba.
