La Ruta 2008 — Stage 3 Report, Full Results, GC, Photos – Ramírez in Charge

November 14, 2008 (Aquiares of Turrialba, Costa Rica) – Federico Ramírez (BCR-Pizza Hut) confirmed he’s the big favorite to win this year’s La Ruta de los Conquistadores to claim his fifth title and second consecutive victory. “Lico” completed the 67km Stage Three, between the Terramall Shopping Center in Tres Ríos and the Aquiares Coffee Village in Turrialba, with a time of 3:20:23. His closest rival, Paolo Montoya (Economy Rent a Car-Seven Capital), couldn’t repeat his amazing performance on Stage 2 and finished second at 6:18 behind Ramírez.

This stage win practically seals the overall victory for Ramírez as he has a comfortable 13:09 advantage over Montoya with just one stage left. “I want to thank my teammate Alexander Sánchez who did a terrific job today. This is the kind of work that you are always expecting from a partner and friend,” commented Ramirez.

The strategy of their team manager, Albin Brenes, worked perfectly. Sánchez attacked at the very beginning of the stage on the first climb. That move forced the race selection and reduced the lead pack to three – Sánchez, Ramírez and Montoya.

France’s Thomas Dietsch (Gewiss-Bianchi) and Spain’s Roberto Heras (Giant Spain) were battling for fourth to sixth spots against Enrique Artavia (Súper Pro Bikes-Economy Rent a Car) in a group behind.

At the front, Sánchez understood that his mission was accomplished and established a pace to allow “Lico” with the lead. Ramírez established a 200-meter gap over Montoya, just before reaching to main climb of the day on the paved road that heads up to the Irazú Volcano.

Today’s stage benefited Ramírez who knows the terrain as he lives on the slopes of Irazú. The Stage Three climb is actually his favourite of the whole race. “Yeah, I feel like home up there. People cheer on me when they see me training and competing and the fresh temperature of the mountains always feels good,” added Ramírez.

Lico arrive at checkpoint three with a comfortable 4-min. lead over Montoya and managed to increase the gap on the corridor that connects Irazú and the Turrialba volcano.

“We thought Paolo would gain some time on the downhill from the volcano into Aquiares as he did yesterday. Nevertheless I descended really fast and actually increased my lead. But that wasn’t the plan – I was supposed to take care of myself and my bike, but the weather helped us out and the downhill was pretty dry and rideable,” Ramírez explained.

Friday’s victory reasserts the race leader and his team’s confidence. “Tomorrow’s stage will be more control tactics. It’s the flattest but also the longest of the race, so I think Alexander and I will be able to respond to any of Paolo’s attacks.”

Women and Master’s
Adriana Rojas (Bemosa-PQ) also won again and is now just one stage away from celebrating the only title she hasn’t won on Costa Rica’s MTB Calendar. Though she was forced to fight for the stage, Rojas managed to chase down Austrian rider, Lisa Pleyer, who lead the stage during the climbing section. Rojas’ time today was 5:04:51, while Pleyer finished second at 8:46 behind.

Rojas leads the general classification with a time of 18:45:50. Canada’s Sandra Walter (Pedal Magazine) holds on to second place overall at 1:14:42 behind.

In the Master’s and Veteran categories there were no changes following today’s results. Costa Rican racers Santos Corea (Citi-Litespeed) and Roberto Ballestero (KSH Bikes) are still in their leader’s jersies in the Master A and Veteran divisions, while Canada’s Mike Charuk continues to lead in Master B Men’s race.

All riders will meet their destiny tomorrow. The final stage at La Ruta will decide if they go back home with a victory. The longest course of the race 125km will start at 7am in the heart of Aquiares Village and finishes at the traditional venue, Reina’s Complex, in Playa Bonita, beside the Caribbean Sea.
