November 13, 2008 (Tres Ríos, Costa Rica) – Costa Rica’s Paolo Montoya (Economy Rent a Car-Seven Capital) reduced the gap in the General Classification between himself and race leader Federico Ramírez (BCR-Pizza Hut) at this year’s La Ruta de los Conquistadores. Montoya won today’s second stage with a time of 3:52:02 leaving Ramírez 2:49 behind.

Though “Lico” still wears the yellow leader’s jersey, his advantage over Montoya is now a little less comfortable. After two stages, Federico’s overall time is 9:48:28 while Montoya follows him closely at 7:28.

Paolo’s Backyard
Stage Two kicked-off at 7am from the Quintas del Sol complex in Santa Ana, with a two kilometer controlled ride into Santa Ana city before riders settled in to the first challenge of the day.

It seems like this first climb up to the southern hills of Santa Ana benefited Montoya who lives on the slopes of these mountains and knows the terrain practically as if it was “his own backyard”. This section included one of the main changes introduced to this year’s edition of La Ruta.

Besides the climb, the new course design also featured double and single track portions through the “Montes de Cielo” state, a mountain property that belongs to Costa Rica’s Fox Shox representative Luis de Ezpeleta.

After finishing the 10km steep uphill, Montoya and Ramírez entered into the woods together and the pair continued to stay together on the slippery “Palo Encebado” downhill, during the day’s main paved climb.

Montoya used his improved technical skills precisely on the descent of the last coffee-planted dirt section, another innovation at this year’s La Ruta. His breakaway held until the end of the race at the Terramall Shopping Center, and permitted Montoya to capture the stage winner’s orange jersey for his own efforts.

While Ramírez remains confident about what he has to do over the next two days he didn’t look that strong today compared to his archrival Montoya.

Open Women’s Race
In the women’s competition, race leader Adriana Rojas (BEMOSA-PQ) executed another amazing performance to win her second stage in a row completing the 78km course in 5:27:10. Second place today went to Canada’s Sandra Walter (Pedal Magazine) who is now third place overall.

In the Master A Men’s race Costa Rica’s Santos continues to lead as does Roberto Ballestero in the Veteran Men’s category. Whistler-based Canadian, Mike Charuk, is closer to his second consecutive Master B crown, as he had another strong day winning his second stage in a row, and is now more than 35 minutes ahead of fellow Canuck Andrew Handford.

Tomorrow’s Stage 3 departs from the Terramall Shopping Center at 7am and finishes 67 kilometers later at the Aquiares Coffee State, in Turrialba. Highlights of the race include climbing Irazú Volcano, the green corridor between this point and the Turrialba Volcano, and of course, the most technical garden-rock descent of the whole event known as “El Tapojo” into Aquiares village.

Paolo Montoya: “We hope the race gets more open from now on. I actually felt much better today and I’m only waiting for my legs to stay as they were on this day’s course. I guess tomorrow I will try to follow Lico’s pace up to the Volcano’s checkpoint and then I’ll try to cut off some time on the descent just as I did today”.

Federico Ramírez: “I think things are very clear. I have my best options on the climbing and Paolo is doing pretty good on the downhills. I suppose his season in Europe has done that. However, La Ruta still has many ascents left so we will see what happen with the rest of the race.”
