November 17, 2004 – The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) announced today its decision not to renew the contract of National Team Coach, Yury Kashirin.

“The CCA is appreciative of the contribution that Yury has made to our organization over the past 11 years,” said Acting Director General Brett Stewart. “However, we feel that change is necessary to continue to best serve our long-term athlete development and competitive goals.”

Yury moved to Canada from Russia in 1993 to coach the Canadian junior team and the women’s road team. When mountain biking became an Olympic event in 1996, he was appointed Head Coach. With the creation of the first National Cycling Centre in Victoria, BC, in 1996 he became the Centre’s Director and Head Coach. An Olympic Gold Medalist in Team Time Trial for Russia in 1980, Yury has influenced many athletes who have achieved World Championship and Olympic medals for Canada.

“Yury will be exploring new challenges and we sincerely wish him the best in all future endeavours,” added Stewart. The Canadian Cycling Association continues to pursue its mission to lead and support the development and growth of cycling in Canada. Programs for athlete, coach, officials and event development are led by expert volunteers and staff. The association’s national office is located in Ottawa.
