August 29, 2002, (Kaprun, Austria) – Australia swept junior gold with Lisa
Mathison winning the junior women’s race and Trent Lowe taking the junior
men’s title. Difficulties plagued the Canadian team in both the junior
men’s and women’s races today in Kaprun, Austria. Canadian National
Champion Jean-Ann McKirdy flatted in the first part of the junior women’s
race, forcing her to lose some time on the leaders. Sophie-Anne Blanchette
went over the bars and landed wrong. A broken collarbone as a result of her
crash immediately ended her race. In the end it was Elsie Torresan who was
Canada’s top finisher in 22nd place, McKirdy was 23rd, Mathilde
Hupin-Debuerme was 24th, Kate Scallion in 26th and Marie-Laurence in 28th.
There were 32 starters and four DNFs in the women’s race.

In the junior men’s race Max Plaxton was sitting in third or fourth
position when he flatted and eventually had to abandon the race. Canada’s
top racer was Quebec’s Frederic Bussieres who crossed the line in 24th
place. Canadians Jeremy Trudel, Adam Coates and Derek Zandstra finished in
28th, 52nd and 65th respectively. There were 94 starters in the junior
men’s field and 10 DNFs.
