Judge Orders UCI and Spanish Federation Not to Act

October 11, 2006 – Spanish judge, Carmelo Jimenez Segado, who is presiding over the Operacion Puerto affair has ordered the UCI and the Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) not to take any actions against any of the 58 cyclists named (including Basso, Ullrich, Mancebo, Sevilla, etc.), until the present court case is heard, probably in June 2007. The cyclists’ names, together with some “well-known footballers” were on a list discovered by Spanish police in the drug sting in May of this year.

Pat McQuaid, the president of the UCI, has said recently that if the Swiss Cycling Federation accords Jan Ullrich a license for 2007, that the UCI will contest it. McQuaid added that ProTour Code of Ethics prevents cyclists from siging with a team while they are under investigation for doping.

Meanwhile, a judgment is now expected on Ivan Basso’s case in late October.
