Job Opportunities – Own the Podium and Physical and Health Education Canada

January 12, 2010 – Here are a couple of sports-related job opportunities with Own the Podium and Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada). Own the Podium (OTP) is an innovative and collaborative initiative without precedent in Canadian Sport. It was created to bring together the key partners involved in leading and funding excellence in Canadian sport, with specific emphasis on achieving excellence at Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada) is a national, charitable, voluntary-sector organization whose primary concern is to influence the healthy development of children and youth by advocating for quality, school-based physical and health education. PHE Canada advocates for and advances quality physical education and quality health education programs offered in Health Promoting Schools to enable students the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to lead physically active and healthy lives, now and in their future. The association is managed on a day-to-day basis by a professional office staff based out of Ottawa.

Own the Podium

Position: Director of Technical Leadership

Job Description:
Recognizing coaching and technical excellence as the highest strategic priority in the delivery of OTP goals, the primary function of the Director of Technical Leadership is to ensure the Canadian sport system has the coaches, high performance directors and other technical personnel required to consistently win medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This position will work in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure coordinated technical system delivery in high performance.

Core Competencies:
– Demonstrates a sense of direction and purpose aligned with the vision, guiding principles and goals of OTP
– Targets gold level performance striving to be ‘leading edge’ in own area of expertise seeking opportunities to improve systems and products
– Continually makes efforts to understand client needs in an inclusive, outreaching, adaptable manner
– Behaves in an honest, respectful, trustworthy, fair manner maintaining consistency in words and actions honoring commitments
– Self-monitors work to ensure quality and accuracy raising the standards for quality

Roles and Responsibilities
1. Evaluate the current coaches working with targeted athletes and determine their needs.
2. Identify gaps in technical knowledge and/or leadership skills existing within coaches, high performance directors or other technical experts and ensure that appropriate action is taken to reduce or eliminate the gap.
3. Lead the development and implementation of national training programs for coaches and high performance directors at all levels of the high performance sport system.
4. Partner with NSOs and CSCs to develop and recruit world leading coaches (domestic and foreign).
5. Develop and implement strategies to retain Canada’s world leading coaches and high performance directors.
6. Partner with provincial and territorial sport organizations and governments to increase the number of FT and PT qualified coaches in the system.
7. Partner with CSI’s to recruit and employ full time professional coaches.
8. Work with Canadian coaches and coaching organizations to strengthen their programs and to seek their assistance in delivering world leading PD programs.
9. Develop and implement strategies to create a coach and technical staff pathway including job descriptions, professional development, succession planning, standards of contract and compensation guidelines.
10. Lead the establishment of a national (junior and senior) coaching database.
11. Develop and implement effective communication tools to ensure coaches and HPDs are provided with the most current technical information from CSCs, OTP, CAC, Coaches of Canada, SIRC and other relevant organizations.
12. Identify and implement strategies to equip coaches and HPDs with the skills and abilities to lead integrated support teams for senior and junior national teams.
13. Work with key stakeholders to develop and implement curricula designed to educate and train high performance coaches in Canada.
14. Establish and implement a mentoring program for HPD’s and National Coaches of targeted sports.

Qualifications
– University Degree or College Diploma
– Over ten years’ experience working at a senior level in the high-performance sport system.
– Previous experience working at a multi-sport organization is an asset
– Computer skills and knowledge of the MS Office Suite is required.
– Bilingualism is a preferred asset

Compensation
The compensation package will be based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Position: Communications Manager

Job Description:
PHE Canada is seeking a Communications Manager who will be responsible for leading various initiatives within the Communications Department. The candidate will be a dynamic, task-oriented individual with strong communications and public relations skills, and the ability to multi-task.

Responsibilities:
– Manage the production of newsletters, briefings, and the association’s website
– Assist with the development of PHE Canada Journal and publications
– Manage the association’s award and recognition program
– Develop and plan special events and activities, including national conference initiatives
– Coordinate ongoing media relations, advocacy and social media activities
– Conduct ongoing research on new statistics, media stories, etc.
– Plan and coordinate communications activities specific to assigned projects
– Assist with the development of proposals, planning and reporting of assigned projects
– Conducting Quality Control checks on all materials developed for public consumption
– Liaise with office staff, volunteers, clients, suppliers and partners
– Manage unit budgets

Qualifications:
– Post-secondary education in the area of communications, journalism, or related discipline
– Good knowledge and/or work experience within the education, health, sport and recreation sectors
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and French
– Excellent understanding of marketing, public relations and social media
– Excellent organizational, budgeting and administrative skills
– Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks
– Familiar with the operation of not-for-profit organizations
– Self-starter and ability to work independently
– Microsoft Office, web-based programs (HTML, Contribute,
– Content Management Systems), Microsoft Publisher and graphics programs

The selected candidate will work closely with all office staff and report to the Executive Director. This is a full time position within PHE Canada, with a salary range of $45,000-$55,000.
