August 14, 2002 (Toronto, on) – It is with great regret that the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) announces the sudden passing of Jim Thompson, CEO of the COC, this morning in Vancouver, where he was attending meetings with the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation. He had turned 60 years old in May.

Jim’s appointment with the COC commenced on March 4 2002. COC President, Michael Chambers said, “The COC is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our new CEO, Jim Thompson. Jim was passionate about high performance athletes, and was dedicated to the advancement of high performance sport in Canada. With enthusiasm, he brought that vision to life within his few short months with the COC. I have lost a dear friend. Sport in Canada has lost a dear friend.”

Jim is survived by his wife Sheila, his son Jake, and daughter Samantha. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim’s family at this time.
