January 25, 2004 – Stage five of this year's Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under was a day for the Australians.  The 147-Km race started and finished in Willunga and featured two separate circuits; a two lap “flattish” circuit followed by a different circuit that contained the major selection of the race, Willunga Hill. With the steep, 400-M coming in the last 15-Km of the race, it was expected to have dire consequences on the field of racers. Race leader Patrick Jonker (UniSA) used his team perfectly to control the race as they rode herd and kept a breakaway group of 10, just within reach. Approaching the hill, they ramped up the speed, caught the escapees, and drove it into the climb.  Over the top, Jonker found himself in a lead group of 15 flying down the descent on the run-in to the finish.  Just inside of 3-Km, Ben Day (Team Australia) attacked and was able to hold off the chasers for the stage win, followed by Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) and Baden Cooke (FDJeux.Com).  Fellow Aussie Alan Davis (Team Australia) took the 4th spot, giving the fit Australian riders the top four positions.  Navigators' leading man David McKenzie led in the next group, but lost 1:16 on the race leader.  There were no changes in the Overall GC.

Stage 6

The sixth, and final stage was held earlier today on a 4-Km circuit in
downtown Adelaide with a total distance of 81-Km (20 laps).  With a
pancake-flat course, the team of race leader Jonker would have their work
cut out for them, as the attacks would come frequently.  With only
14-seconds separating places two – nine, the real battle was for second
place in the Overall GC, and a stage-win. The flurry of attacks began
immediately as the UniSA squad tried in vain to hold it together.  With
their lead man McKenzie now in 11th in the GC, the Navigators men-in-blue
were very aggressive, in search of a stage win.  With 11-laps remaining,
Navigators' Jeff Louder was with several others, keeping the pressure on the
field.  A few laps later, it was Navigators' Kirk O'Bee attacking with two
others. At four to go, the Navigators squad is on the front as Siro
Camponogara attacks, but is caught. The speed of the peloton is very high,
as it looks to be a field-sprint in the making.  Navigators' Ciaran Power
attacks and is joined by 6 others, but they are soon caught.  Power
continues to attack. The field is intact as they approach the finish line,
and once again it's Baden Cooke taking the top honours, followed by Robbie
McEwen and Alan Davis. Patrick Jonker takes the Overall GC, in this, the
final race of his professional career. There were no changes in the Overall
GC.
