May 30, 2006 (Toronto, ON) — Cervélo Cycles sends warm congratulations to Ivan Basso and his Team CSC teammates on his resounding Giro d’Italia 2006 victory this weekend. It marks not only Ivan’s, but also Cervélo’s first ever Grand Tour win. After the Tour de France, the Giro is the most important bike race in the world.
Basso took the leader’s pink jersey on the eighth of 21 stages and never relinquished the lead, winning the Giro by the biggest margin since 1965. Not only did Ivan win the Giro, he also set the record for most stage wins on different bikes with victories on a Cervélo P3 Carbon (stage 5), Cervélo Soloist Carbon (stage 8) and Cervélo R3 (stage 16 & 20). The win enabled Team CSC to hold on to in their first place in the ProTour world cycling ranking.
“When Phil and I started Cervélo, we set these lofty goals of having our bikes in a Grand Tour and winning one, but that it has actually happened now is unbelievable. This is a major milestone for everybody in the company, and it feels great to be able to share this success with everybody at Cervélo and at Team CSC,” says Gerard Vroomen.
“When we started our partnership with Team CSC,” adds Phil White, “their goal was to be the best cycling team in the world and our goal was to become the best bike manufacturer in the world. Seeing how the team worked together in the Giro these past three weeks and how Ivan had a choice of three different Cervélo’s — each the best of their kind – depending on the course profile, it is amazing to see that we have both succeeded.”
Basso will now take some well-deserved rest before preparing for the 2006 Tour de France, a race for which he is now the top-favorite. After all, he was the only one able to keep up with now-retired Lance Armstrong in the past two editions.
About Cervélo Cycles
Phil White and Gérard Vroomen founded Cervélo Cycles in 1995 when their design for a new time trial bicycle, built at the request of a professional cyclist, failed to garner interest from traditional cycle manufacturers. Today, Cervélo Cycles is the largest time trial bike manufacturer in the world. This Canadian company is internationally recognized as one of the most innovative and fastest growing bike manufacturers the sport has seen in years.
In June 2005 Cervélo was ranked 34th in the seventeenth annual PROFIT 100 ranking of Canada’s fastest-growing companies by the magazine PROFIT: Your Guide to Business Success.
In 2002 Cervélo entered into a major partnership agreement with the successful Team CSC. According to Bjarne Riis, Team CSC Manager and the 1996 winner of the Tour de France, “Every little edge I can find for my team can prove to be the deciding factor. That’s why we’ll be on Cervélo’s this year.” Based in Toronto, Cervélo currently produces nine different models and a full line of cycling apparel. Their products are available internationally.
