IPC Road Worlds 2006 — Day 4 Final – Silver for Canada

September 18, 2006 (Aigle, Switzerland) – Québec’s Stéphane Côté and Pierre-Olivier Boily won the silver medal today in the men’s tandem event at the paralympic cycling road races, as the IPC Road Worlds 2006 concluded with Canada finishing on a fantastic note.

The Québec tandem team was as close as 35 seconds from Poland, who won the event. Côté and Boily managed to escape the peloton at 2 km from the finish to take the silver, while the eventual winners were ahead in a breakaway.

“The men’s tandem was a fantastic race with all three of our tandem teams placing in the top ten. With Stéphane and PO (Pierre-Olivier), who came in second, Canada earned silver, that’s right SILVER!,” exclaimed the CCA’s National Paralympic Team Manager, Larry McDougall, just after the race.

Brian Cowie and Devon Smibert (AB) were 8th, at 38 seconds back, followed by Gene Della Siega (BC) and Craig Deveer (ON) in 12th place at 38 seconds.

In the women’s tandem race Shawn Marsolais and Clare Cameron (BC) narrowly escaped a spectacular crash in the 69.6 km event to finish 7th, at approximately 2 minutes behind the winners.
