IPC Road Worlds 2006 — Canada’s Breton 5th

September 15 (Aigle, Switzerland) – Mark Breton (Charlesbourg, QC) placed 5th in the LC 1 men’s individual time trial road event at IPC Worlds today. Eric Bourgault (Orford, QC) wsa seventh in the LC 2 category, while Rico Morneau and Mark Beggs, both of Montreal, QC, were 10th and 13th respectively in the HC B division.

Road results – Men’s individual time trial

Amputee (LC):

Mark Breton (Charlesbourg, QC) had a great performance and took fifth place in the LC 1 division, with a time of 35:12, at 1:36:65 behind the winner, Austria’s Wolfgang Eibeck, over the 24.2 km route.

“I gave it all what I could, but I was not feeling really good during the race,” said Breton.

“It was very challenging for Mark to get a podium against riders missing one hand, as Mark is missing one arm and it makes a big difference for cyclists riding in the same category,” added Stephen Burke, the CCA’s National Paralympic Program Coach. “A top five performance was expected for Mark and that’s what he succeeded in getting, which is fantastic.”

LC 1 podium:

1. Wolfgang Eibeck Aut, 33:35:80
2. Wolfgang Sacher Ger
3. Fabio Triboli Ita

Eric Bourgault (Orford, QC) had a 7th place finish out of 23 riders in the LC 2 division, with a time of 37:37 over the 24.2 km course.

LC 2 podium

1. Jiri Jezek Cze, with a time of 33:37:24
2. Carol Eduard Novak Rom
3. Christian Wilberger Aut

LC 3 podium (16.6 km) no Canadian

1. Laurent Thirionnet France
2. Antonio Garcia Spain
3. Michal Stark Cze

Hand Cycle (HC):

Canada’s Rico Morneau (Montréal, QC) finished 10th with a time of 31:18 over 16.8 km, at 2:27:40 behind the winner. He was followed by Mark Beggs (Montréal, QC) in 13th with a time of 32:04, at 3:13:63 out of a total of 21 riders in the HC B division.

Men’s HC B podium:

1. Marcel Pipek Cze, 28:51:13
2. Max Weber Ger
3. Heinz Frei Sui

“All in all, Rico, Mark and Eric were very happy with their results. I feel that they did an awesome job,” concluded CCA’s National Paralympic Team Manager Larry McDougall.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 16 is a busy day for Canada, with Lisa Stowe (LC1), all four Tandem teams, and our CP 3 riders, Jean Quévillon and Brayden all competing. The 2006 IPC Worlds are being held in Switzerland and will finish on Sunday, September 18.
