February 13, 2007 – Canadian, Dick Pound, head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) remains unrepentant regarding his remarks about retired pro cyclist, Lance Armstrong (formerly with Discovery Channel), reports the Union-Tribune News Service. Last year, Pound was critical of a Dutch report clearing Armstrong of doping allegations.
The French daily newspaper, L’Equipe alleged that traces of EPO have been found in Armstrong’s urine samples dating from the 1999 Tour de France (which Armstrong won). Armstrong, 35, won seven consecutive TdFs from 1999 to 2005, beating the previous record of five consecutive wins held by Miguel Indurain (formerly with Banesto).
Pound was recently censured by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his remarks about Armstrong. But Pound brushed it off telling Associated Press that, “Anything I do or say in relation to doping is done in my capacity with WADA . . . I’m responsible to WADA, not the IOC.”
