release by the Intermontane Challenge

March 26, 2009 (Kamloops, BC) – The Intermontane Challenge Mountain Bike Race, to be held in Kamloops July 27-31, was officially launched today. This five-day race will attract single-track riders and spectators from all over the world, while showcasing the area’s elaborate new trail system.

The BC Lottery Corp. (BCLC), an active Kamloops community partner, announced that it has committed $20,000 to help make this a world class event. “We are thrilled to be the Presenting Sponsor for the inaugural Intermontane Challenge,” said BCLC CEO Michael Graydon. “This event provides us with a positive way to support the local community in Kamloops. Not only will it be fun to watch these top class athletes perform, but the course itself will become open to the public for future use.”

Mayor Peter Milobar gave strong support, noting that the race further diversifies Kamloops as a sports destination town. Tourism Kamloops is putting their marketing might behind the endeavour, confident that the Intermontane will bring more adventure oriented visitors to the area.

“The Intermontane Challenge is a five-day “cloverleaf” staged mountain bike race that will take riders over the world’s best single-track,” said organizer Chuck Brennan. “Ascending long single-track climbs will present the riders with the payoff of big descents. Too bad they won’t have much time to enjoy the magnificent views! “

Teams of two riders and solo racers will be competing, making two separate races within the race. The race loop on the first four days will start and end in Kamloops. The fifth and final day of the race will consist of a time trial in the heart of Kamloops. The event is expected to attract a large number of spectators and create excitement throughout the town. Prizes will be awarded to the racers at the end of each day. Overall prizes on the final evening include over $60,000 in cash and merchandise.

The premiere riding area is in Kenna Cartwright Park (Mount Dufferin), which features an extensive series of trails through semi-arid and treed terrain. The changing elevations of the trail provide breathtaking views of the valleys.

The Intermontane Challenge is designed to satisfy competitors’ thirst for adventure while showing the utmost respect and consideration for the natural state of the land. Race organizers are working with the local community to foster strong partnerships and develop a long-term, sustainable mountain bike program that will serve as a model for other municipalities.
