Interbike 2010 – Day 2

by Scott Kelly

September 24, 2010 (Las Vegas, Nevada) – The velo buzz continued on day two as the cycling world put in yet another day of countless kilometers walking Interbike’s five halls checking out the enormous display of 2011 products – and personalities. Here’s a snapshot look at some to the items and people that caught our eye.

Bont Vaypor Shoes
Jeffery Mills, Canadian rep for Bont shoes was on hand to walk us through their new Vaypor, which is based on their successful A-one shoe and has reduced carbon height around the toe box that better lends itself to molding, as well as a new suede liner. All Bont shoes are heat moldable and Mills took the 10 minutes required to mold a set of the new shoes to my feet. Pedal is getting a set of the shoes to test and we’ll report back with a more in depth review in the near future. As with all Bont shoes, they continue to be an industry leader in terms of stack height, weight-to-strength ratio and power transfer.

Park Tools
With 30 new products and eight improved tools for 2011, Park Tool boasts the biggest product release in their company’s history. Among the new items that caught our eye is the Park DT-4, a disc mount facing tool engineered to accurately face post mounts on frames and forks. The DT-4 includes axles for quick-release hubs as well as adaptors for 12, 15 and 20mm thru axles. Also new for 2011 is the ES-1 Event Stand, this storage rack is built to hold up to 12 bikes by the nose of their saddles. Unique to the ES-1 is the ability to buy an expansion unit in order to store more bikes.

Geax Saguaro Tubular 29er Tire
Tubular tires are currently an undeniable trend in mountain bike racing. The grip, comfort and lower rolling resistance offered by a tubular tire make them the perfect choice for a no-holds-barred race bike and Geax now offers the 290 tpi Saguaro in a 29×2.0 size.

Pashley Bikes
Venerable UK manufacturer Pashley was on hand with their line up of British built city bikes. Pashley are still built in Statford-upon-Avon, England and stick true to British traditions like Brooks Saddles, Sturmey Archer hubs and 650 A wheels (thats 26×1-3/8″ for those more familiar with the imperial system). If you are looking for a quintessential lugged English bicycle that looks great and will last a lifetime, look no further.

Paul Components Chain Keeper
Paul of Paul Components was at Interbike after an 8-year absence and said the response he has been getting has been great. New for this year are additional offerings in their line of Chain Keepers. Paul now offers a high mount chain keeper for frames requiring a high mount Front D. Still on offer is the BB mount chain keeper for full suspension, carbon and frames with non-round tubing.

Stan’s Notubes Alpha 340 Pro Road Wheelset
Stan the man was on hand to debut his new Stan’s Notubes Alpha 340 Pro road wheelset, the world’s lightest road tubeless wheelset. Weighing in a 1,200 grams and featuring Stan’s new road specific rims, this wheelset offers the benefit of going tubeless at a very competitive weight. “This wheelset is ideal for the rigors of cyclocross,” commented Stan while he seated a Hutchison tubeless road tire using a very small hand pump.

Campagnolo CX 10 Cyclocross Cranksets
Making Campy work for cyclocross has always been a chore until now. Previously riders could either spec a different brand’s crank with a more cross friendly gearing or they could spend the time sourcing rings that work Campy’s 135 spacing. Campagnolo has listened and responded with their new offering. Available with 46-36 gearing and boasting special seals on the Power Torque Bottom bracket, Campagnolo’s new crankset is sure to be a hit.

Brompton Folding Bikes
Brompton folding bikes have a reputation as the best folding bikes on the market and are built in their factory in West London. A Brompton folding bike folds up in 10-20 seconds and consists of some 1,200 parts, three quarters of which are unique to their bikes. The Brompton line up consists of six different models sharing the same basic platform. Custom options are also available such as paint, Brooks saddles, special Ti rear ends and forks, and different handle bar styles.
