Indoor Velodrome in Edmonton One Big Step Closer – Whitten Supports New Facility
by John Symon
October 13, 2012 (Edmonton, AB) – Mayor Stephen Mandel and Canadian Olympian Tara Whitten both support building an indoor velodrome in Alberta’s capital as part of a $97 million Coronation Park recreation centre reports The Edmonton Sun. No timeline is indicated for this project, but this week the city recommended an $8.5 million design budget for the recreation centre. The proposed indoor velodrome would replace the current 333m outdoor track at Argyll which dates from 1977.
Whitten (TIBCO to the Top), the 2011 Track Worlds Omnium champion and Canadian Omnium champion that year, is now championing the Edmonton velodrome project. She spoke to media about training at the Los Angeles velodrome with the women’s pursuit team that finished third at the 2012 London Olympics.
Whitten explained that she was in Los Angeles because she had to be. “We all wanted to be in Canada. I would love to train at home.”
