This year, we visited Germany's International Bicycle Trade Fair, or IFMA Cologne 2002, in the books as one of the world's largest trade shows. And, according to all accounts, it far exceeded all expectations in 2002. The Cologne-based show, which ran under the slogan “Trends, Business, Fun,” saw a total of 23,000 trade visitors from 70 countries meandering through 93,000 square metres of exhibition space. An additional 23,500 cycling fans came to the fair on the Public Day, which featured more than 200 international BMX and mountain bike professionals competing in the IFMA Bike Challenge.
Put together by KolnMesse, one of the world's largest trade fair organizations with offices in 84 countries and organizer of more than 40 international trade shows, IFMA focuses mainly on new trends and innovations in the city and trekking bike sector, which makes up more than 50% of all sales throughout Europe. “It's not just about image. IFMA is the show for doing business and seeing new trends,” said Frank Peiffer of Shimano Europe. A total 95% of respondents surveyed at IFMA indicated they were involved in purchasing decisions during the show. New trend-setting products highlighted at the show included Shimano's Cyber Nexus and Nexave C810, which feature digital Integrated Intelligence to control shifting, lighting, and suspension; Giant's EZB, which merges traditional design with the safety and comfort of a recumbent; and the all-new Fitness Bikes, which take comfort bikes to a whole new level.
In 2003, KolnMesse's IFMA will take place from Sept. 11-14.
