July 25, 2002 (Manchester, England) – Canada has started the Commonwealth
games with a bang in cycling, with Clara Hughes and Lyne Bessette taking
Gold and
Bronze Medals, respectively in the individual time trial.

Both cyclists
are ex-Saturn riders, and have
been competing with the Quebec provincial team or National team in several
top races this spring. Hughes adds the medal to her several summer and
winter Olympics medals. In second was former world champion Anna Millward.
Canada’s Susan Palmer-Komar had a very solid ride, finishing 7th.

Certainly the biggest disappointment comes in the form of quadruple junior
World Champion Nicole Cooke (Wales), who was an odds-on favourite to medal
in the Time Trial. She finished 10th, almost two and a half minutes off
the pace.
