Holmgren and Theberge Win Canada MTB Cup at Horseshoe – Report, Results, Photos

release by Superfly Racing

July 15, 2019 (Barrie, ON) – Round 5 of the Canada MTB Cup didn’t disappoint as riders enjoyed a fabulous day at Horseshoe Resort leading up to MTB National Championships this coming weekend July 20-21. Mother nature even helped out with a little rain on Saturday.

The new start area, at Horseshoe’s former adventure park, proved a perfect location with our own area, yet close to all of Horseshoe’s amenities! The view over Lake Horseshoe, and all the other activities make this destination a “Shoe”-in as one of the National MTB series’ top venues.

A different course, still with the challenges of racing in a huge bowl, put riders to the test while still providing an overall, fun circuit. The elite races had a different look than previous years, with many of Canada’s top riders at the World Cup in France, it was a bit sad to be without former 3-time Horseshoe champion and local star, Peter Disera, but we’re all happy for his incredible career-best performance at the World Cup!

Even without the brothers Disera, it was sure nice to see a first-time Canada Cup win for Hardwood/Next Wave’s Gunnar Holmgren. His battle with Tyler (Icicle) Orschel of Durham Shredders came down to the last climb, but Gunnar had a little more in the tank for the win. Taking the third spot was William Cote of Equipe de Quebec.

The women’s Elite race also saw many different riders atop the podium, with Marianne Theberge of MSC taking the top spot. Ruby West, from Specialized/Ten Speed Hero took second, with Roxane Vermette, also of MSC a minute and half back in third.

The Junior races saw some great battles, with Charles-Antoine St. Onge of Dalbix Siboire taking the win in the men’s event. Hot on his tails was Hamish Graham of Comox Valley Cycle Club, while the third spot went to Xavier Roy of Ponsse. The women’s race was won by Julianne Sarrazin of Vélo Pays?d’en?Haut/PG, with second spot going to Juliette Larose?Gingras of Vélo Cartel X BL Coaching. Local racer Kaitlyn Shikaze of Cyclepath Oakville Race Team rounded out the podium in third.

Many of these riders will be spending the week in the area, getting ready for National Championships this coming weekend at Hardwood Ski and Bike. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to see the nations best battle it out on the former Pan-Ams course
