Hill & Moseley Win Garbanzo Enduro at Crankworkx Results and Photos

July 23, 2007 (Whistler, BC) – Sam Hill (Aus) Monster Iron Horse proved once again that he truly is unmatchable when the trails turn slippery. Hill took to the Garbanzo Enduro downhill at Whistler today after only one practice run, and managed to put 35 seconds on his nearest competitor, breaking the finish line beam with a time of 14:25.7. His run included a rare event, he caught and passed multiple world champion Brian Lopes (USA) GT near the bottom of the 14-minute run through mud and fog.

Soon afterward Hill spoke to us about his. “It was pretty good, I was only riding 75 or 80 percent. I kept looking ahead to see what was coming up. I only got one practice run in yesterday, so I didn’t want to push it and fall down because I didn’t know where I was going. Overall it was good. I tried to save some energy at the bottom, but on this course you get so tired anyways.”

Five days of near constant rain destroyed the course and offered riders the opportunity to ride all manner of mud, from soupy and runny, to thick and gooey.

The Aussie laughed as he commented on the atrocious conditions found all over the track. “It was pretty sloppy and the middle bit was like riding down a creek. But it was fun, I had a couple of tear offs and that is all I needed.”

For the women, victory went to Great Britain’s Tracy Moseley (Kona/Les Gets) with a time of 17:23.5. Fellow Brit, Fionn Griffiths (Norco) crossed the line just over 10 seconds behind.

Canadian riders didn’t have a great afternoon. Recently crowned 2007 national DH champ Micayla Gatto (Rocky Mountain/Haywood) was not pleased with her run. “It went really, really bad, I had some huge crashes. It was so slippery.” Angela Teng was the top Canadian woman in 4th.

For Canada’s men, the best chance for a medal sat with Steve Smith (Cove). “I hit a slippery root in a steep section and put the bike into a tree. I went down and the bike stayed up top, so by the time i got back up to it, I just had to let the guy behind me go past,” Smith recounted.

The next event here at Crankworx is the inaugural WomensWorx tomorrow followed by the A Line Air DownHill on Wednesday.
