April 30, 2008 (Tokyo, Japan) – Parking space is at a premium in Tokyo, a densely-populated city of 13 million inhabitants. Bicycle parking has been a nightmare but a hi-tech solution to the problem is now featured on YouTube. Cyclists can confide their bike to a robot which disappears into an elevator with the bike and whisks it down to a subterranean parking garage for 9,400 bikes, taking a mere 23 seconds to securely park a bike. Retrieving your bike is just as fast. The facility’s inner workings look like the inside of an oversized coin-operated food dispenser.
