October 21, 2010 – Winter holiday season is fast approaching and many people are already planning and booking their hot weather getaway. If you know anyone planning a trip to Cuba this winter can you please consider passing along the attached information on how they can help with humanitarian aid by taking a bike or two. You can help by making equipment donations or by helping transport donated equipment during your next Cuban holiday. Complete details of the program including what donations are needed and how transporting donated bikes is done is available below and at www.bikesforcuba.com.
Bikes For Cuba – How can you help?
Bikes for Cuba is a small personally run project supporting the junior school cycling program in Banes, Cuba near Holguin and Guardalavaca.
They need decent road style bicycles and related equipment including tires, helmets, cycling jerseys, cycling shoes, parts, tools, etc. Almost anything suitable for road riding. Bikes should have size 700 wheels and tires as getting parts there for replacements is impossible and we have to keep some uniformity amongst the bikes. Tubular wheels are okay too. Smaller bikes and frames are particularly needed.
Transporting the donated bikes to Cuba is our biggest issue. Tourists going on vacation to Cuba can easily take bikes with them on the airplane. Bikes are boxed for transport and the airlines (all of them) take these bikes regularly as simple sporting goods. We look after all costs, if any. Bikes are typically delivered to the airport at your time of travel and checked through. Upon arrival in Cuba the bikes are simply loaded onto the resort bus along with regular luggage. The team coach in Cuba then arranges a convenient time to pick up the bikes at the resort.
We have donated bikes and equipment ready to go at all times, year round.
