May 17, 2004 – U.S. Olympic hopeful, Sue Haywood (Davis, W. Va.), placed third in Saturday's round two of the Swisspower Cup, a UCI E1 categorized race. Haywood's third place effort netted her 30 UCI points as she finished just over a minute behind race winner Petra Henzi (SUI) and :26 behind runner-up Andrea Huser (SUI). Haywood is using the Swisspower Cup as preparation for the opening round of the UCI World Cup series which takes place next weekend in Madrid, Spain.
Currently, Haywood is considered a strong candidate for the lone U.S. Olympic team slot in the sport of women's mountain biking where a nomination to the team will likely be based on international ranking. According to the latest official rankings published by the UCI on May 13, Haywood is the second-ranked American, tenth overall with 958 UCI points. Mary McConneloug (Fairfax, Calif.) is currently ranked ninth overall as the top American with 975 UCI points.
