June 24, 2004 – Here are the results of the Harris + Harris 2004 Midweek
Midsummer Madness criterium covering 38 laps (80kms) in a stiff wind.
Thanks to: Kit McCaffery, Ann Wilson, Mr. Eades, Carolyne Haill, Tim
Porter, and Bobby Mrvelji’s kids for marshalling 81 entries
The second midsummer Madness Harris+Harris Criterium was very successful,
with over 80 riders starting the 80km race. The handicap group joined in at
around 60 km and some managed to hang in with the fast crowd.
An early break by Thorben Wieditz (Jet Fuel) came to nought as he was still
very tired from riding the GP Cycliste de Beauce the previous week. The
major move in the race was started by Jet Fuel’s Jeff Hansen and he was
quickly joined by all the top seven finishers and Midweek’s Chris Atkins.
This group steadily gained almost two minutes on the remnants of the bunch
with Midweek and Gears riders doing some very effective blocking.
Atkins eventually bailed but the rest of the break took the majority of the
$20 primes between them, the Lefebvre brothers showing the rest how it’s
done. The last sprint before the finish was taken by Peter Morse (Midweek)
and he almost won the overall race but seemed to mistime his sprint (very
unusual for Peter) and was just pipped on the line by Dan Lefebvre.
Lefebvre continues to lead in the series, with 75 points. Heath Cockburn
(La Bicicletta) is away at Nationals but still is in second place with 56
points. Midweek’s Chris Atkins is in 3rd. with 51 points and Morse’s second
place tonight moves him up to 4th. with 45. the top five is rounded out by
Pavan’s Ed Maset with 39.
