October 12, 2003 (Hamilton, ON) – Yesterday's junior men's road race was full of crashes, including one during the first lap that took out Canada's Kevin Lacombe. Lacombe was rushed to the hospital where he spent the night in intensive care. He reportedly woke up during the night and although he wasn't physically able to speak, he was able to write down cohesive questions and answers via pen and paper.

Despite the crashes, the remaining three Canadian riders left in the race did finish.  Brandon Crichton in 58th, National Champion Raphael Tremblay in 86th and Christopher Meier in 108th.

The win went to the Netherlands' rider, Kai Reus. With an average speed of 40.99km/h, Reus finished the 124km race in 3:01:44. Many attacks and breaks were initiated but it wasn't until the last lap when Reus got ahead and this break stuck.

He stayed ahead and had just enough to time to raise both arms in the air as he crossed the finish line. Fourteen seconds down were second and third placed riders, Denmark's Anders Lund and Czech rider, Lukaz Fus.

Reus shared with the press that although he was afraid to burn out before the finish, going solo, his determination took over his tired legs and he told himself, “I'm going to win this race”.
