October 11, 2003 (Hamilton, ON) – As the junior men are racing on the course, the spectators in the grandstands at the start/finish line are anxiously anticipating the results of today's race.
In the stands, Pedal Magazine found National Jr. Team member Brandon Crichton's parents. We had a chance to speak with Brandon's Dad about this big day.
Pedal: So today is the big day. How does everyone feel, Brandon must be excited?
Brandon's Dad: You know, I really can't tell you that. Simply because we really haven't been in communication with Brandon for about a week.
Pedal: And that's because?
Brandon's Dad: They're out at the hotel with the rest of the team, preparing, doing whatever they're doing, getting focused for the race itself. We've had a couple of short phone conversations but that's about it. We know how he operates and that he gets himself focused, so he does he thing and we kinda do ours!
Pedal: You msut be very excited for him?
Brandon's Dad: We're excited; obviously, it's tremendous for him to be in front of a hometown crowd. Scattered throughout the area here are a number of his friends that got together at 7:30 this morning to get down here. We flew his brother in from university in Wisconsin and that was a nice surprise for him and again, there are some people here that we hadn't expected would be here that are here.
Brandon has only been racing on the road for two years after mountain bike racing for the three years before that. Mid-race today he is sitting comfortably in the main pack with five laps to go of the 124km road race.
