October 9, 2003 – While the men are riding the time trial, former World and Olympic champion Chris Boardman takes on a different role: working behind the scenes with the British Cycling Federation. “It's a lot less stressful, at times,” Boardman admitted watching the while munching on a bag of chips. Boardman however has used his incredible knowledge of time trials to good use, scoping out the course and then attempting to assist the other riders mentally and technically before their race. “Millar's BCF bike is the best one out there, I reckon,” Boardman says, “A lot of time and effort was put into R & D, with most of the designs originating from the work on the track bikes.” What's hard for Boardman, or at least challenging, is relaying the information that has been almost intuititive for him as a rider, to someone else. “It's different to try and explain to a rider how they should approach the TT, how they should focus on the course or the race.” But Boardman is enjoying the new role, “it's a far more intellectual role and I am really enjoying it. This course is great, with a little bit of everything so it's been an interesting preparation for the riders.”
