Green Mountain Stage Race 2006 – Stage 2 Controversy

September 2, 2006 — Once again, Stage 2 at the 2006 Green Mountain Stage Race (GMSR) was disputed in controversy. Last year, after a controversial bunch sprint, Stage 2 was cancelled and then reinstated to the benefit of Erik Lyman,. In 2006, riders decided they would no longer race due to the lack of security that threatened the peloton.

A police car parked in the middle of the road forced riders to move dramatically creating an unavoidable crash that took down almost half of the peloton. The riders decided to stop the race and discuss security issues with the officials. Consequently, the team captains decided to cancel the race in order to protect the Pro 1/2 peloton.

” I’m disappointed, since I’m third on GC, so I’ve lost a great chance to confirm my spot, before tomorrow’s hilly stage,” said Ryan Roth from Ontario. ”The organization this year has again been overwhelmed. It’s sad to say, but organizing a pro race requires a minimum of security, something the GMSR organizers have not been able to do,” he added

“Will someone have to die before proper actions are taken, ” commented Erik Lyman/Calyon Litespeed pro cycling team

Each year the GMSR is losing popularity with pro squads and elite teams across North America due to it’s inability to create a safe environment for riders.Today’s events don’t help the credibility of the Green Mountain Stage Race organisation.
