April 05, 2012 (Belgium) – Team SpiderTech’s Guillaume Boivin of Longueuil, QC and Ryan Anderson of Vancouver, BC both cracked the Top 5 at the Grand Prix Pino Cerami, in Belgium, a race part of the UCI Europe Tour.
Both Boivin and Anderson finished side-by-side in the Top 5, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:52:11, the same time as the race winner Gaëtan Bille of World Tour team Lotto-Belisol.Today, the team knew and expected that the real race would likely happen on the three-lap finish circuit of 24km. Caleb Fairly marked a critical 19 man split on the first two laps. Then, Lucas Euser bridged to the move to have two Team SpiderTech riders in a split of 21 men. This move was caught with one lap to go.
Ultimately, the race ended with a sprint to the finish line
“I’m not happy, no. Fourth is close, but we wanted to get a win. I’m really happy to have helped Randy (Ryan Anderson) today. We talked and knew there wouldn’t be much co-ordination with other teams because of the uphill finish. I told him to just follow me, I would sprint for the win, but if he could come around he should. And we should both sprint for a result. Lucas [Euser] and Dave [David Boily] moved us into position with 5km to go which was great. In the finish the Lotto rider caught everyone off-guard. There was a pause and then Randy and I got a bit caught in the swarm,” said Guillaume Boivin, after the race.Kevin Field, directeur sportif of Team SpiderTech: “We had a clear plan and the boys executed really well today. The race more or less happened the way we expected, but there were more riders in the sprint at the end than we expected. It’s great to see Randy get in there. And great to see how committed the guys were to helping him. He’s the ultimate team-mate, and today was a bit of payback for all the work he normally puts in for his team.”
Boivin, who raced over 2500 kilometers in 17 races this season alone – the most of all riders in Team SpiderTech–, has cracked the Top 5 five times this season alone, stepping three times on the podium.
For Ryan Anderson of Vancouver, BC, this fifth place today represents his career-best result on the international scene, cracking the Top 10 for the first time with a professional continental team.
