May 11, 2003 – A typically unpredictable stage today saw Fabio Baldato (Alessio) take the win after a tough finish, which saw Aussie Robbie McEwan relegated to the back of the pack after winning the race initially. When Baldato tried to pass McEwen on the right, the Aussie threw an elbow in order to prevent the Italian from crossing. After review, the comissaires decided to award the victory to Baldato. Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze-Elitron) couldn't hang on in the final small climbs of the day and was denied a record-equalling stage victory, finishing instead in 104th.
