Carleton was just three seconds off the World Record set by American Sarah Hammer on the same Mexican track in 2010. With Carleton’s performance in Aguascalientes – an infamously fast track – the Canadian pursuit record is now faster than the British record set by former World Champion Rebecca Romaro.
How fast is Carleton? Her 500m time ridden right after the pursuit in the Omnium was just a second of Lori-Ann Muenzer’s Canadian record in that event – a time Muenzer set without two full days of racing in her legs!
Carlton and teammate Laura Brown’s time in the stand alone individual pursuit are especially important as the Canadian women’s team enters a period in which they will not be able to rely on team stalwart Tara Whitten. If this weekend’s results are any indication, the next generation is well on the way to filling the sizable legacy Whitten leaves behind.
