January 22, 2014 – Gillian Carleton of Victoria, BC is a Canadian Team track cyclist and Women’s Team Pursuit 2012 Olympic Bronze Medal winner. She offers the following valuable advice to riders facing obstacles, such as illness or injury.

When experiencing setbacks in training and competition due to illness or injury, it is important to keep a positive mindset and focus on the bigger picture. It can be disappointing to miss out on a big race, or to lose fitness while being unable to train, but allowing yourself to become overwhelmed with anxiety and negative thoughts won’t help speed up your recovery.

If you are forced to take an unexpected break mid-season, use it as an opportunity to really focus on the smaller stuff that may go by the wayside during times of heavy training – nutrition, core and flexibility (if you are physically able), goal setting (perhaps make a few adjustments to account for your time off), and just all around general health. With the right attitude, and dedication to proper recovery, you might just find yourself coming back even stronger than before!
