April 15, 2007 – The first BC Cup of 2007 was held in Pitt Meadows on Sunday April 15, 2007 at the Harris-Roubaix Classic and was won by Jenny Trew of the Giant Women’s Team and Will Routley of Symmetrics in the men’s division. The women’s race was contested over seven laps covering 70 km and featuring a 2.5 km gravel section each lap modelled after the famed European classic World Cup Paris-Roubaix. In fact the events are both held on the same day each year.
The women’s open event saw a huge field of close to 50 riders and it was great to see a highly active women’s race and with six large teams present it will make for very interesting and competitive racing this season. Joining the newly formed Giant Canada Women’s team on the line were squads from Symmetrics, Trek/Red Truck Racing, Oak Bay, BH/Integrale, and Total Restoration, as well as several top riders such as Scott’s Trish Sinclair and Expresscopy.com’s Alison Testroete.
The race was quite aggressive from the start with several small breaks forming, chasing ensuing and counter attacks following. The result of this was attrition in the field. With just under two laps to go it was Giant Canada rider Leah Guloien attacking and getting a small gap soon to be joined by Symmetrics’s Leah Goldstein. These two reached a maximum of 12 seconds but were reeled back in by the remaining 9-10 riders at the front chasing with just about a lap to go.
The last lap saw several attacks especially on the penultimate straight which thinned the lead group to a long single line at times. The peloton, now with about nine riders, was headed for a bunch gallop with Giant’s Jenny Trew triumphing over BH/Integrale’s Laura Brown and Expresscopy.com’s Testroete at the finish.
It was a great start to the season for Trew and the new Giant Canada Women’s team who placed four riders in the lead group and Trew will now sport the BC Cup Leader’s jersey at the next BC Cup.
