Giant Bicycles 6 Days of Burnaby — Day 6 Report and Final Results

January 7, 2007 (Burnaby, B.C.) – The Symmetrics pairing of Zach Bell and Svein Tuft wrapped up their victory tonight on the final day of the Giant Bicycles 6 Days of Burnaby, by winning both of the elite Madison races.

Bell consolidated this even further by winning the elite points race over young American rider Austin Carroll.

Carroll seemed to come into form over the course of the 6 Day event, and showcased some very impressive speed to the crowds watching from the roof seating opposite the home stretch.

Another rider coming into his own was Aldergrove, B.C.’s Marsh Cooper. While Cooper finished off the podium in the points race, his attacking style won the admiration of all in attendance.

In the end the Symmetrics juggernaut finished four laps clear of American teams, Cofidis and US National, in the overall standings winning by an impressive four-lap margin.

The track world cup bound Canadian teams of Cam Evans/Christian Meier and Ryan McKenzie/Martin Gilbert finished fourth and fifth respectively amassing valuable experience and training over the course of the week.

Sprints
There were no sprint events held today, however Cam Mackinnon was awarded the sprint omnium title at the awards ceremony, and deservedly so as he went through the week undefeated in any round of competition.

Women
Jenny Trew won the only women’s race of the day, a 50-lap points race, over Annette Hansen, former US pursuit champion (and wife of Madison rider Kenny Williams).

In doing so Trew won the women’s omnium title, despite having skipped the keirin earlier in the week, and narrowly defeated Laura McKenzie.

A Group
Second and fourth place finishes turned out to be all that Scott Laliberte needed to win the A group omnium at this year’s Burnaby Six Day. Laliberte defended the lead he took last night from a tiring Jeff Ain (who faded to fourth in the standings) ahead of American Brian Nelson and Laliberte’s own teammate, Murray Solem.

Nelson might have lost the war for the omnium but he won one of its major battles by beating Laliberte in the 80-lap points race. Nelson’s win came on the strength of an impressive lapping effort taken before the halfway mark of the race.

Track all-rounder, Matt Chater, won the 40-lap scratch race (that replaced a cancelled elimination) in a bunch gallop to wrap up the A group’s week of competition.

B Group
Junior rider, Matt Potma, continued to showcase his impressive strength by winning the B group’s points race ahead of Jetfuel rider, Dave Beyer, and Gina Grain.

While omnium leader Adam Schwind finished behind these frontrunners in fourth it was enough for him to win the omnium ahead of Potma, who nearly overtook the Western Washington University rider despite not having scored as consistently earlier in the week.

The B group elimination was won by Junior Worlds sprint team member Lawrence Leroux over Matt Potma.

Race Notes

– Canada’s track world cup bound athletes (with the exception of Team R.A.C.E rider Julia Bradley who returned to Ontario this evening) will be staying for a training camp in Burnaby for a final tune up before the LA World Cup.

– BC team coach Richard Wooles talked briefly of the impressive level of the event, both its organization and of the standard of competition, and expressed a desire to see more such events on the calendar to give young riders key events to prepare for and gain critical experience. Pedal will have a follow up interview with Wooles in the next few days on his thoughts on the event and on Canadian hopes going into the second half of the international track season.

– American team Rubicon did not start the final day, as rider Daniel Harm twisted his knee in a crash with Tyler Farrar last evening. Harm chose to rest up for the upcoming American World Cup Qualifier.
