September 8, 2002, Les Gets, France – Sunday’s race saw Spain’s Marga
Fullana (Orbea) win the women’s final event of the series. She finished
over a minute and a half ahead of recent Worlds Silver medallist Anna
Szafraniec (POL, Lotto-PZU). Germany’s Sabine Spitz (Merida Inter) was
third.
Alison Sydor was riding strong and was Canada’s top finisher in fourth
place. Canadians Marie-Helene Premont (ORYX) and Chrissy Redden (Gary
Fisher-Subaru) were ninth and tenth, putting three riders in the top ten
for Canada.
World Cup leader Alison Dunlap (USA, Luna Women’s MTB) finished in fifth
spot but secured enough points to win the overall title. Spitz finished in
second place. Fullana finished in third overall despite winning all three
events she entered. Of the five races, Fullana missed two due to reportedly
being unwilling to fly to the North American events.
Sydor finished in fifth place overall, moving one spot up from her overall
position last year. The next top Canadian was Kiara Bisaro (Gears Racing),
racing her first full World Cup season, she finished in a solid 14th place
overall. Redden, after several mechanicals and flats this season, finished
in 15th overall, eight spots down from last year. Trish Sinclair, also in
her first full season on the World Cup circuit, finished in 16th overall.
